Laura Atkins will be reading Sled Dog Dachshund, her debut picture book published by Minted Prose, at the Turn the Page Festival held at the Children’s Fairyland, the storybook theme park by Lake Merritt, on February 6. The event is sponsored by the Oakland Public Library.

Minted Prose debut author Laura Atkins will be leading writing workshops and consulting on individual literary projects at the Gullah Rising Conference to be held at Folly Beach, South Carolina on April 5-12, 2017. She will facilitate On-Site Reflections, which allows participants to creatively express their “looking back” reflections in words, photos, drawings, weavings, gathered objects, paintings and dance. The “Gullah Rising” conference will feature stories shared and roots intertwined, celebrating lowcountry flavors, fibers, flora, fauna, music, art, and life.

Laura is a San Francisco Bay Area author, teacher and independent children’s book editor. Her passion for community and diversity is infectious, as will be evident to all her students.

“We encourage our authors to engage with readers and other writers in the pursuit their art. Laura’s workshops will offer the perfect forum for advancing children’s literature,” said Linda Purpura, Publisher, Minted Prose. “We saw her skills in full bloom in her Minted Prose book–Sled Dog Dachshund. Minted Prose debut author Laura Atkins will be signing galleys for her debut book Sled Dog Dachshund at the Independent Publishers Group (IPG) booth, alongside Faherty & Associates, at the Northern California Booksellers Association (NCIBA) Fall Discovery Show on Friday, October 28 at 12:30 PM.

The NCIBA Discovery Show is being held at the South San Francisco Conference Center, just north of the San Francisco Airport. The show will feature presentations, educational events, and various receptions to present and sign new books. The show floor hours are 5-7 PM on Thursday, October 27, and 12-5 PM on Friday, October 28.

Workshop by Laura Atkins

Minted Prose debut author Laura Atkins will be leading a workshop about picture books entitled “In Pursuit of Picture Books Where Text and Image Meet” at Book Passage Book Store in Corde Madera, CA on Saturday, October 15, 2016 from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.

During the session, Laura will discuss the various components of the picture book format such as typical number of pages and using drama to get page turns, as well as the importance of developing satisfying stories with minimal text. Time will be allocated for participants to do their own “writing play” as well as learn more about trends in publishing.

The event is part of The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators San Francisco North and East Bay Marin County Meeting Series.

Minted Prose debut author Laura Atkins will be leading the Writing for Young People workshops at the Mendocino Coast Writers Conference being held at the Mendocino College Coast Campus on August 4-7, 2016. Registration is now open for this pretigious gathering, which has been in existence for over two decades. Attendees will find literary expertise, inspiration, encouragement, and community. Laura’s experience and enthusiasm are compelling. She is an author, teacher, and independent book editor with an extensive professional background. At the conference, Laura will be giving the lecture, “In Pursuit of Picture Books.”

Laura will also be one of the featured authors at the “First Friday” Town Hall Literary Readings in Fort Bragg. The event, which is free and open to the community, will be held on Friday, August 5, 2016 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, right over the conference weekend. “First Friday” is when galleries and shops stay open late in the historic city.

Fischer shares her nearly decade-long adventure into the heart of Old Europe and deep into centuries of art, history, and war. During this journey, she forged connections spanning the century, from the eruption of WWI to contemporary New York.

Linda Fischer is a global traveler with a passion for literature, languages, and the people she encounters along the way. A devoted student of the Hungarian culture, she spent nine years traveling and researching The Memory Book. This is her first book.
